THESE WOODEN OBJECTS PUZZLED THE MINDS OF SOCIAL MEDIA USERS

A social media user had shared a picture of wooden dowels and that picture went viral as it puzzled the minds of social media users.

One social media user had shared a comment about the picture as, “Old school clothespins. [We] used them for hanging clean wet clothes outside on the [clothes] line to dry in the sun [and] fresh air!”

People used wooden pegs in ancient times to keep their laundry on the line against the windy weathers.

In ancient times, these pegs were made out from bone, wood or stone. The wooden clothespin we are using today were manufactured during the 19th century, as a new and effective tool.

The patent of the modern version of the object is belonging to Vermont’s David M. Smith, in 1853. These clothespins “are hinged together” by a wire “so that the two longer legs may be moved toward each other and at the same time move the shorter ones apart.”

“Another advantage and a very important one too, [what] my improved clothes pin possesses over the common pin is that it cannot be detached from the clothes by the wind as is the case with the common pin and which is a serious evil to washerwomen.” Smith stated in his patent.

After the industrial improvements, in the 19th and 20th century, the clothespins became more mechanized, and started to produced in masses.
