As Veronika and Nathan were ready for their next level, for their relationship, Nathan had gave the engagement ring to his mother, for safekeeping. Veronika saw the ring on the finger of her future mother-in-law.
Veronika explained that she understands the special bond between a mother and a son, and the entitlement of a mother over the life of her son. But what happened, for her, was not related to that reality.
They were together for the past three years. They started to talk about being married, and she noticed that her wedding was already planned on her head.
Veronika and Nathan started to imagine their wedding reception, as she talked about her bridal dress, and nathan was talking about dumplings.
Then it was the subject of the engagement ring. As she was not fussy about it, she had some several requirements.
Veronika explained, “Please, not gold and no colored stones. That’s all. Everything else is up to you.”
Then, on the next day, Nathan asked for her ring size, as he was in search of the perfect ring. After he bought the ring, he went back home and showed it to his mother and sister.
Nathan’s sister, Annie had texted to Veronika as, “ou’ll love the ring, V! It’s so you! Nate gave it to Mom for safekeeping until the day.”
Veronika was happy that Annie had texted her, because she saw that Nathan and herself was on the same page, as they didn’t just talked, they started something.
She had an idea about the appearance of her ring, because Nathan forget the Tiffany & Co. brochure on the dining table, where he circled few of the rings. Veronika was thinking that every ring he circled were amazing.
They went to have a dinner to Nathan’s family. As their tradition, once a month they were eating with their family.
As they were eating, Veronika excused herself to go to bathroom. Then Nathan’s mother, Gloria went with her, and there Veronika noticed the ring on Gloria’s finger. The ring was one of the circled ones from the brochure.
As she decided not to talk about it, she felt hurt. She was annoyed with the occasion, as she couldn’t understand the safekeeping version of Gloria.
As they went back to the table, she took a picture of Gloria’s hand, secretly. She wanted to have a proof. But she noticed that Nathan and Annie didn’t noticed that Gloria was wearing the ring.
She tried to stop thinking, as Nathan didn’t showed the ring to Veronika yet.
But it was unacceptable for her for Veronika to see Gloria was wearing her engagement ring. But it was not the first time Gloria was breaking boundaries. In that same year, Nathan surprised Veronika with a couple’s massage session, and when Gloria found out about that, she wanted to tag along, and Nathan gave his spot to his mother.
Two months after the dinner, Nathan popped the question, “Veronika, will you marry me?”
“Yes!” said Veronika without thinking. But she noticed that the ring was the same ring, which Gloria was wearing on that night. She felt the same pain she felt that night.
She talked with Nathan about it. She then showed the picture she took as a proof.
“What? No, that can’t be right at all. I showed it to her to keep it safe, but she wouldn’t. She couldn’t have,” Nathan said, as he couldn’t believe it. “I need to talk to her.”
Nathan then took Veronika to his mother’s house.
As they entered inside, Nathan confronted with his mother, Gloria. “Mom, why were you wearing Veronika’s engagement ring? And how long did you wear it for?”
“I just wanted to feel what it’s like,” Gloria responded, as she was shocked. “I’ve never had an engagement ring, and I had to buy this band for your father to put onto my finger. I just wanted to know what wearing something big and beautiful like Veronika’s ring would feel like. I’m sorry, I thought I had the right to it.”
As Nathan was annoyed with the situation, Veronica was feeling sympathy for Gloria, as she tried to imagine having to buy her own wedding ring, and not receiving an engagement ring.
“Mom,” Nathan started, “This is not about your unfulfilled desires. Veronika and I are starting our life together, and you cannot take precious moments away from us.”
“But Nathan, I deserve to experience these things too. I’ve sacrificed so much for you. Can’t you understand?” Gloria said, as she cried.
As the night went on, they drink some tea together as they talked. Then before they left, Gloria wanted to talk with Veronika. “Veronika, I’m sorry,” she said, “I just wanted to feel a part of something special. I hope you can find it in your heart to forgive me.”
And Veronika forgave her, as her future husband, Nathan did.
For the Mother’s Day, Nathan and Veronika wanted to do something special for Gloria, they bought an engagement ring, a big one, for her.
