WHAT IS THE SECRET OF THEIR MARRIAGE OF 22 YEARS, PIERCE BROSNAN AND KEELY SHAYE SMITH
Since their first meeting in 1994, Brosnan and Smith are together. Before the couple met, Brosnan’s first wife passed away due to her cancer, which traumatized Brosnan.
For more than two decades, Brosnan and Smith are married. They kept staying together through the thick and thin.
As he was a successful actor, Brosnan, had experienced rough times in his private life. His father, Thomas, abandoned Brosnan when he was an infant, with his mother, May.
His mother worked in London, as Brosnan was raised by his grandparents in Ireland.
Brosnan stated to Esquire, “There were two lodgers — workingmen, one in the factory and one in the sawmill,”
“I had a metal bed with a curtain around it…. That was my room and my haven and my space.”
He met with his father when he was 31, in 1984. “I had a Sunday afternoon with him,” he stated.
“A story about this and that, had a few pints of Guinness, and we said goodbye,”
“I would have loved to have known him. He was a good whistler, and he had a good walk…. That’s as much as I know about him.”
Brosnan was 15, when he went to London, and he studied drama in school. He met with his first wife, Cassandra Harris in there.
She had two children, Charlotte and Christopher. They married in 1977, and Brosnan adopted her children.
“I want my children to have love in their life when they are young. I want them to know the true meaning of love,”
After Cassandra had starred as a Bond girl in the 1981 Bond movie, For Your Eyes Only, Brosnan met with the producers, and became the next Bond.
It was in 1983, when Brosnan and Cassandra had their children, Sean. But a saddening news devastated Brosnan, while he was in India, shooting a movie. Cassandra was rushed to the hospital, after she fell ill. She was diagnosed with ovarian cancer, and passed away in 1991.
In his interview with Metro, Brosnan stated, “When your partner gets cancer, then life changes. Your timetable and reference for your normal routines and the way you view life, all this changes. Because you’re dealing with death. You’re dealing with the possibility of death and dying,”
“And it was that way through the chemotherapy, through the first-look operation, the second look, the third look, the fourth look, the fifth look. Cassie was very positive about life,”
“Cassie was very positive about life,”
“I mean, she had the most amazing energy and outlook on life. She could read people extremely well. She had, above all, the greatest sense of humor. She had this wonderful laugh, which her children have inherited.”
In his trip to Mexico, in 1994, Brosnan met with the love of his life, Keely Shaye Smith.
Keely talked with Chicago Tribune in 1995, where she revealed that she was a model in her youth, but she changed her career, as she stated, “I realized at some point I was propagating a beauty myth, so I left modeling and acted for a year,”
In 2001, Keely stated, “[He was] tall, dark, and handsome — everything that everybody would immediately be attracted to. He had this mischievous sparkle in his eyes. I thought, ‘Wow! Wow!’”
“I understand why women find him sexy, because he is an appealing man. He really likes and appreciates women. … He’s intelligent, captivating and his real beauty emanates from the soul. And, like a fine wine, he’s aging beautifully.”
As Brosnan was grieving over Cassandra, he explained that Keely had saved and treated him, as he stated that he will never be fully healed from his wound of losing Cassandra.
“I had a great marriage which sadly had its own ending, and I was lucky enough to find love again. We were meant to find each other. I thank God for her every day,”
“When Keely looks at me, I go weak. I love her vitality, her passion. She has this strength that I wouldn’t be able to live without.”
“Wherever I went in the world, I missed her, and I’d send her tickets to come so we could be together. We just seemed to fit,”
“I found a great woman in Keely Shaye. Not if I searched a million times over would I find one as good.“
The couple married in 2001. Their first children arrived in 1997, Dylan, and at the same year of their marriage, they welcomed their second child, Paris.
His daughter, which he adopted while he was with Cassandra, Charlotte, was one of the bridesmaids at the wedding. Unfortunately, Charlotte passed away, like her mother, from ovarian cancer, in 2013.
In 2014, Brosnan spoke at the Stand Up To Cancer telethon, and stated, “To watch someone you love have his or her life eaten away bit by bit by this insidious disease, that kind of sorrow becomes an indelible part of your psyche,”
“I held the generous, strong, beautiful hand of my first wife Cassie as ovarian cancer took her life much too soon. And just last year, I held the hand of my funny, wonderful daughter Charlotte before she too died from this wretched, inherited disease.”
Brosnan stated for his granddaughter, from his son, Sean, “Here’s looking at you kid… in remembrance of Charlotte and with happy birthday wishes for my darling Marley May.”
Brosnan had defended his wife, after Keely was harshly criticised on the social media, in 2021. Internet trolls stated that she had gained a lot of weight, after she married with Brosnan.
“Friends offered her surgery to reduce her weight. But I strongly love every curve of her body. She is the most beautiful woman in my eyes. And also because she had our five children,” Brosnan stated.
“In the past, I truly loved her for her person, not only for her beauty, and now I’m loving her even more that she is my children’s mother. And I am very proud of her, and I always seek to be worthy of her love.”
Brosnan stated that with his wife, they love to play board games. He stated, “Keely and I love backgammon,”
“We’re very competitive. I taught her how to play, and now she just trashes me. It’s just so annoying. It really, really, really is.”
“I do have a tool kit. But if Keely sees me with a hammer, she’s very worried. She’s just, ‘No, no, put that down. Go away,’”
“We like each other a lot. We love each other a lot,”
“And we’ve been down the road, and we’ve seen many, many hardships as families do, as we all do.”
“But watching someone grow up with you and grow old with you is a very spiritual journey,” Brosnan added.
“To watch each other change … whatever it may be, the hair, the waist. But it’s the love in the heart.”
“She allows me to go out into the wild blue yonder and do what I do as a man, as an actor, [she] always has,”
“Keely is a journalist, a reporter. She’s an artist in her own right. And as a woman, she has made a family for our sons.” Brosnan concluded.
