TEACHER BECAME A TAXI DRIVER FOR HIS CHILDREN, AND ADOPTED THE BABY ON HIS BACKSEAT WITHOUT KNOWING A BIG DETAIL FROM BABY’S LIFE
“Dad, do you have to do this? Can’t you return to teaching?” 15-year-old Travis turned to his father, Billy, who was getting ready for his night shift. Billy started to drive a taxi, as he once was a teacher, his dream job.
Until his father’s shift was over, for the next eight hours, Travis had a huge responsibility for his younger brothers to make sure that they slept enough while their father was working at night shift.
Billy was 48, and he was still feeling hurt from losing his wife, the mother of his sons. It was raining, and he was in traffic. The weekend was showing itself with the crowd of cars. A couple got into his car with their child.
“How happy they look!” Billy thought. “Even I was happy like this once upon a time. Samantha, I miss you, honey.”
Everything was different ten years ago, while his wife Samantha was alive and she was pregnant with number five of the family. They were a happy family with their children, Travis, Johnny, Matt, and Eric.
“I should’ve made it to you on time… I wouldn’t have lost you had I not gone to supervise the exam that day,” Billy thought again.
When Samantha was in labor, Billy was in school, working instead of another teacher who was on sick leave, and Samantha had developed a complication, few days before her due date.
As he buried his wife, Billy let his dream job go because he wasn’t able to focus on his job.
“My dedication to teaching cost my wife’s life. I don’t hate my job, but I can’t continue working while caring for my sons. My youngest boy needs me. I can’t work peacefully leaving him with a nanny,” he said to his colelagues at school.
A honk had brought Billy back to his car, and he noticed a woman was waving at him, who was holding a baby.
“Hey, can you please drop me at the airport?” The woman asked.
As Billy remembered that he was supposed to pick a couple twenty minutes later, and the airport was ten minutes away so he had the time.
“Thanks!” The woman said as they started. Ten minutes later when they arrived at the airport, the woman stopped the car just outside of the airport.
“You drove so fast, driver. I feel sick… I wanna throw up.”
“Huh, I’m sorry, mam. I had a pre-booked ride, so I was in a hurry.”
“Never mind! Can you please wait here with the baby? I need to throw up. I’ll be back after washing up, alright?”
“Sure, mam. I’ll wait here.”
But after several minutes later, the woman didn’t arrived as Billy’s time was running up.
“Where is she? I’m late.”
For more than twenty minutes Billy waited for the woman, and saw that the woman’s bag was gone too. As he called the police, they asked Billy, “Do you have her booking details?”
“No, officer. I was on my way to pick up somebody else, and she asked me for a lift to the airport. I had twenty minutes, so I offered her a ride.”
Billy returned home with the baby as the mother was not present. Two days later he went to the police station to learn if the mother was found.
“We could not track down the child’s identity. It looks like she abandoned him. We sent the child to a foster home for now,” an officer said.
Few days later, as no one appeared to take the boy, Billy decided to adopt the boy.
“Sons, meet Shaun, your youngest brother. He is going to live with us. I want you to love him the way you love each other, alright??”
Billy and his sons took care of Shaun, and after three months later, Billy was forgotten that he adopted Shaun.
One day the police called Billy to inform that they had found the grandparents of Shaun. When Billy took Shaun to the station, he saw an old couple.
“Dear, this is our grandson… this is our grandson!!” Mrs. Felkins cried once she held Shaun.
“So, you’re the taxi driver who adopted our grandson?” Mr. Felkins asked.
“Yes, sir. I adopted him because I thought Shaun had nobody. His mother was never found, and he needed somebody to love and comfort him.”
“Meet me at the lawyer’s office tomorrow, mister!” The old man said. “And bring the baby.”
As Billy went to the office on the next day, he learnde that Shaun had an inheritance of $1 million, and he was called for sign the guardianship of the inheritance.
“After our daughter, Amanda, broke up with her boyfriend, she was hell-bent on her fashion career against our wishes,” Mr. Felkins stated.
“When we discovered she was pregnant and didn’t want the child, we advised her not to terminate her pregnancy. We told her it was against our beliefs as Christians and feared our reputation in the church would be ruined. She decided to abort her baby against our wishes, but it was too late.”
“She told us about her new job overseas, but we were against it. We wanted her to stay and raise her child. When she refused, we disinherited her and bequeathed our estate to our grandson. She was furious with us and took him away while he was sleeping. We kept looking for our grandson everywhere, and a friend in the department told us about the baby and you. Thank you, Mr. Hughes, for stepping up for our grandson!” Mrs. Felkins said.
“And what happened to your daughter, Mr. Felkins?” Billy asked.
“Well, she called us once and told us not to look for her. We traced the number and found she was in Japan. We are not sure about the future, but we are happy that our grandson is now in the hands of a loving father and brothers!”
