As he had a journey in his life, Steve started from scratch, and created his own kingdom, he is currently one of the most influencial man of United States.
He was born in West Virginia, as his father was a coal miner. He grew in a poor family. In his journey that brought him to the place today he is standing, he worked as a a mailman, carpet cleaner and even a boxer.
When he divorced from his first wife, his only source to send money to his children was his stand-up gigs, as when he send the money, he was leaving so small amount to himself that at one point he became homeless.
For three years, he lived in his car, and showered in gas stations and pools. He stated to PEOPLE Magazine, “One or two gigs fell through, and suddenly I was homeless…I had nowhere to go…It was so disheartening… A week is really the maximum you can do. This was three years!”
As he tried to achieve his breakthrough in the 80s, he found it when he reached to the final of “Johnnie Walker National Comedy Search”, which that led him to host, “Showtime at the Apollo.”
As he had four children from his first two marriages, he became the father of seven with his third marriage to Marjorie Bridges.
He decided to adopt Marjorie’s children. And for his birthday, his whole family appeared on the show, as they surprised him with their speeches. But his stepson, Jason, made him cry with his words.
“You took my mother, but you gained a whole lot more with that. You gave me your last name, and that’s the unthinkable.”
“My father, you know, he did what he could, but he wasn’t there. And you stepped in and you gave me that.”
“If only you knew the true amount of love that I have for you… I need for you to know that now. It don’t get no better than you, Dad. You it.”
As he heard his stepson, Jason finished talking, we see that Steve was having trouble with holding his tears back, as he covered his eyes with his hand. Then the camera turned to the spectators, and everyone was crying.
Marjorie made a speech for her husband too. She said, “I appreciate the man that you are, the example that you are for our children … I appreciate how you love me, how you loved my children as though they were yours, how you treat my parents as though they were your parents. Just everything.”
After his family talked, Steve got the stage, as he stated, “I got 4 full-time jobs for them. So that when I am done, I want you all to just have remembered that somebody cared more about you than himself,”
“I will defend your honor until the day I die, I love you all, this is what it is for me. This is the greatest moment I’ve ever had. I’m very proud to be your father.”
