NEW FOUNDINGS FROM THE POMPEII, MIGHT HAVE GIVE YOU SOME INFORMATION ABOUT THE LIFE OF A SLAVE FROM ANCIENT ROME
While excavations on Civita Giuliana villa continued, the excavators found a small bedroom, that was used by slaves of that area.
In the room, there were two beds, one had a mattress, and the other one had a blanket. They are thinking that robbers had damaged the other mattress, while they were attempting to get in.
Italian Culture Ministry stated, “These details once again underline the conditions of precarity and poor hygiene in which the lower echelons of society lived during that time,”
“The possibility of making casts, i.e. of filling the voids left in the cinerite of the layer of ash from the eruption of Vesuvius with plaster, has made it possible here to obtain almost a photograph of a room most probably inhabited by servants, by slaves.” Said the director of the Archaeologist Park of Pompeii, Gabriel Zuchtriegel.
“It seems that control was primarily exerted through the internal organization of servitude, rather than physical barriers and restraints,” Zuchtriegel added.
