A white husband, had took a DNA test on his child, without informing his black wife, as he thought that his child had a darker skin than his wife. Later on, he shared his storn on Reddit’s r/AITA subreddit, and asked that if he was wrong.
The Original Poster, OP, had shared that he is happily married with his wife, along with their two children, a 3-year-old daughter, and a 5-year-old son. He stated they decided to marry, after she got pregnant.
As his son was born, he accepted him as his own, but there was a thought on the back of his mind, as he was thinking that his son wasn’t looking like him. OP stated his son was darker than his wife, and wasn’t looking like a mixed child, who should have received white skin from him. As he had questions, he stated that he chose to trust his wife, without asking her anything.
They had their daughter, when the son was 2. OP stated he has no doubts about his daughter. But he stated, “But I realized I was beginning to resent my son. It felt unfair that I had to care for someone else’s child. I also began to resent my wife because I felt she had betrayed me.”
OP decided to take a DNA test behind his wife. Then he learned that he was indeed the father. As he kept the test hidden for four years, his connection with his wife and son increased with his relief.
But he couldn’t hold it any longer, and talked with his wife about the test. And as it is expected, his wife went mad. She asked that if he had thought this way about his daughter, and OP said no. Then his wife said that he is a racist, because the daughter was more white than black. OP responded as, “Even when I didn’t believe my son was mine, I treated him as though he were.”
And now his wife wanted to leave, and the OP is sleeping on the sofa. OP wrote, “I hoped she would’ve calmed down by now but things haven’t changed. She’s just so furious with me for not trusting her and for in her eyes, denying my son because he’s dark. She barely talks to me unless it’s about the kids. I don’t want to lose my family.”
He asked for advice from Reddit, as he was aware that he is wrong in his actions. The Redditors stated that what he did was terrible, and it is normal from his wife lose control, and want to leave.
