Amanda entered to her classroom with a big smile, as she does everyday, she noticed again that Jimmy’s desk was empty. As she thought that he might be late, bu he againd didn’t showed up.

She wanted to learn from the students and asked, “Class, does anyone know what happened to Jimmy? Anyone here who lives close to his home?”

Noone knew why he was skipping the school, as his classmates shook their heads. Then she started to worry about Jimmy.

As she arrived at his home, she saw the apartment Jimmy was living in. She went to his floor, and knocked their door. There were some alcohol bottles were waiting to be picked besides the door.

“Hello? Is anyone home?” She said.

Then little Jimmy opened the door, as Amelia said, “Hi, Jimmy!”

She was happy that Jimmy was seemed healthy, as she worried that something had happened to him.

“M-Miss Torres?” Jimmy sounded stressed. “I-I am fine.”

“Can I come in, honey?” Asked Amelia to her student. “I’d like to speak with your mother if possible. I called her multiple times, but each time it went to voicemail.”

As Jimmy opened the door, Amelia saw the state of the house. It was a mess inside, as there were dirty dishes, cigarette buds everywhere, and terrible alcohol stench due to the bottles left everywhere.

Amelia saw a little girl, which she was shocked, and asked, “Where’s your mother, Jimmy? And who is she?”

“That’s my sister, Ava, Miss Torres,” Jimmy continued, “She is sick, and I have to look after her…Mommy’s not home.”

As Amelia checked the little Ava as she was worried, she felt that Ava was burning with fever.

“Have you been skipping classes to look after your sister?” She asked to jimmy.

Jimmy lied, and said that he was sick too. But Amelia realised that he was lying, since she was spending too much time with her students, to know them enough that whether they are lying or telling the truth.

But Ava’s situation was a priority, and she decided to talk with Jimmy later. She took Ava and Jim to the nearest child hospital. Jimmy was nervous, and stated that he has no money to pay for the treatment of his sister, but Amelia made him sure that she would take care of it.

As Jimmy felt the warm side of his teacher, he decided to tell the truth about his situation, where he revealed that his mother was an alcoholic, and she sometimes going away, and doesn’t come home for several times, which Jimmy was taking care of his sister.

“When Ava fell sick, I had to stay home and look after her, and I couldn’t come to school, I’m sorry I lied, Miss Torres.” Jimmy said.

“No, Jimmy, you don’t have to be sorry!” Said Amelia.

“Your mother should be the one apologizing. I’ll try my best to help you, OK? Let’s get Ava to a doctor first.”

After Ava was examined by the pediatrician, the doctor wanted to talk with Amelia in privacy.

Amelia said, “What’s wrong, doctor?” She continued, “I’m not the child’s guardian, but I had to bring her here because I was the only elder around.”

“Based on the reports, I believe the child has leukemia, ma’am,” Doctor said to Amelia, which she felt incredibly bad with the bad news.

As her disease was at the beginning, and wasn’t too serious, doctor stated that they have no time to lost, and should start to treatment immediately.

“And h-how much would the treatment cost?” Amelia asked.

“Say anywhere close to $100,000, but it could be more. We’ll need to conduct a few more tests and wait until the results are in.” Doctor Warren responded.

As she first thought to sell her gold pendant, she wanted to talk with the mother first, she thought that maybe the mother of the children wouldn’t be too heartless, and might help.

As they arrived to their home, she decided to prepare a dinner for the children, but there was nothing in the fridge.

“Mommy left us some peanut butter and bread, but it ran out this morning, Miss Torres,” Jimmy said.

Then Amelia decided to go to the grocery store and get them lasagna and garlic bread.

Jimmy said, “I love your cooking, Miss Torres!”

“And I’m happy you two are eating a proper meal! Hey, guys, would you like to live with someone who cooks really well…like me?” Amelia asked.

Jimmy immediately jumped and said yes, but Ava started to cry, as she said “Linda!”

“But Mommy is not good for us, Ava!” Jimmy said.

“No!” she cried. “I-I want mommy!”

As the children started to shout, then Linda appeared on the door, as she was incredibly hangover.

“W-who are you…” she shouted. “What a-are you…doing with my children?”

As she fell to the couch, she yelled, “Get out of my house! OUT!”

“So you are their mother! Do you have any idea what they are going through?” Amelia was incredibly angry.

“C-come here!” She tried to pull Jimmy at her side. Then she trashed him. As Amelia tried to stop Linda, she pushed her too.

“D-Don’t you dare come here again!” She yelled as she kicked her out.

“You can’t hit your children, Linda!” Amelia yelled, but Linda didn’t care. Amelia immediately talked with a social worker, and they went to the apartment again. Then she filed for the custody of Jimmy and Ava.

As Amelia knocked the door, Jimmy opened, and then again it turned out that Linda was away. After Jimmy talked with the social worker, she was convinced and gave Amelia a temporary custody of the kids, until the court judgement.

“Jimmy, Ava, this is just a temporary arrangement, OK?” Amelia said.

“We’ll meet your mother in court later, and the judge will decide what happens next, OK?”

As she was preparing dinner for the children, Amelia said, “You know, Jimmy, I always wanted my own children, but for some reason, I can’t have them. I’m so happy you two are here…Home with me!”

Then Ava started to cry slowly, “Honey, are you OK?” Amelia asked.

“I hate you!” Ava screamed, “I…I miss Mommy!”

“Honey, I told you this is not permanent!” Amelia said to Ava, as she tried to calm her down. But Ava was stressed, and kept crying.

As she put the dinner at the table, Jimmy immediately started to eat, but Ava refused to come. When Amelia prepared a plate for her, Ava pushed the plate away.

“I want Mommy!” She screamed again.

“Well, you can’t go back to your Mommy unless she learns to be a responsible parent, honey. Eat when you feel like it.” Amelia said softly to Ava.

Ava didn’t eat anything that night. Amelia couldn’t sleep as she was worried about the court that was going to happen yesterday. As the day came, Amelia saw that Linda tried to wear her best face against the judge.

The kids were sitting behind Amelia, when Judge Bennett said, “Jimmy, Ava, I want to hear from you both first,”

“You are not under any pressure in my courtroom, so please respond honestly. Who would you choose to live with, Miss Torres or your mother? Jimmy, you can go first.”

Jimmy talked about the truth, and stated that he wants to live with Amelia, while Ava wanted to live with her mother.

“I understand it’s a difficult situation,” Judge Bennett said. Then she turned to Linda and Amelia.

“I’d like to hear from both of you why you deserve custody. But please keep in mind that the court cannot dismiss Ava’s close relationship with her mother or Jimmy’s preference to live with his teacher. You may go first, Miss Torres.”

As both of the women talked as Amelia told the truth, and Linda lied about everything, Judge Bennett decided to give Linda a second chance, as she stated, “The court notes Miss Delaney’s current employment status and struggles to support her children. However, the court cannot overlook the fact that Miss Delaney is the children’s mother and that her daughter values her mother’s presence. As a result, the court gives Miss Delaney a 6-month timeframe to turn things around. Miss Delaney is also required to go through a court-ordered rehabilitation program…”

Amelia devastated with the result, as Linda hugged her children, but Jimmy was not happy with the situation.

Amelia went to Linda’s apartment after the court, and knocked the door. When Linda opened the door, she saw that there was a freshly opened beer bottle on the counter, as she said, “Stop fooling others around you, Linda!”

“It’s about time you stopped drinking and started focusing on your children!”

“What I do with them is none of your business, lady!” Linda said, as she tried to close the door.

“I know you don’t care about them. So tell me what I need to do to have them back!”

“Well, the State pays me, so they’re my money makers! But if you could get me $100,000, we could talk!” Linda responded.

“What? I don’t have that kind of money!” Amelia started to cry against the monstrosity of a mother she was talking to.

“How about that? Sell that, and take the rascals home,” Linda pointed the gold pendant of Amelia. She hide it immediately, since it was the last gift of her late mother.

“I-I can’t sell it!” She said, as Linda shut the door to her face.

After some days, Jimmy appeared at the school. Amelia thought everything was fine, but at Monday, two officers arrived at her house, and stated that they are going to search the house, since Jimmy and Ava was missing.

She was shocked as she worried for the children. Amelia didn’t took them, and she had no idea where they could have gone.

As she decided to check the streets herself, she drove to the playgrounds, and the locations that Jimmy and Ava could go.

She found them at the basement of the school. “Ava! Jimmy!” She cried. Ava rushed to her for a hug, but Jimmy was almost froze, as he had scars on his body.

“Mommy hates us! Can we live with you?” Ava cried, as Amelia was more than happy to be the mother of them.

She filed for the second time, and went to the pawn shop to sell her golden pendant that was gifted to her from her late mother. Pawnshop gave her $90,000 to her, and added another 10 grand from her account and drove to the Linda’s apartment.

“Now that you have the money, stay away from Ava and Jimmy!” Amelia said, as she was happy that the children would be safe at her side now.
