FAMOUS COUPLES WHO HAVE BEEN MARRIED FOR DECADES
The long lasting marriages are not a common thing in between the famous couples, and especially in Hollywood. It is a chance to find the perfect one for you, and working hard for your relationship is the key. Here are five celebrity couples who had passed more than 40 years together.
Ron and Cheryl Howard
Couple of Ron and Cheryl Howard had celebrated their 48th anniversary in 2023. But their history goes back to the high school. In his biography, “Ron Howard: From Mayberry to the Moon…and Beyond”, by Beverly Gray, was stated that Ron had a car in high school, but he was shy.
When he saw Cheryl, that changed. Cheryl had described herself as “crippled by her shyness.” And she had no idea that Ron was an actor too, as her father wouldn’t let her watch TV.
They talked for hours about Cherly’s dog, and than Ron asked her out.
Their first date went so well that they are inseperable since. Their friends thought that they were made for each other.
Then Cheryl’s parents tried to stop them, as they were thinking that their children were going too fast. So they gave permission to meet twice a week.
“I met her, and there was never anybody else.” Ron Howard said in his interview with PEOPLE.
They had four children tohether, their daughter, Bryce Dallas Howard, their twins Paige Howard and Jocelyn Howard, and Reed Howard.
“It’s crazy — we were teenagers; it shouldn’t have worked. We got married young; that shouldn’t have worked either, and yet it really and truly has.” Ron said.
“[Cheryl] has made so many good things possible and so many difficult things manageable. I’m forever grateful.”
Samuel L. Jackson and LaTanya Richardson
They met in the 60s. Samuel L. Jackson was a student at Morehouse College studying Marine Biology, and LaTanya Richardson was at Spelman College. As he joined to a theater club, he loved being on the stage, and then switched to drama.
So he met with Richardson while majoring theater. They had starred in a drama program, and then started to date.
“I married the smart boy.” Richardson said, about her husband.
After their first child, Zoe, Richardson stopped her career to be a devoted to her daughter. The couple had prioritized their family, children. In the first years of their marriage, Jackson was involved with drugs, which affected him to be not present emotionally for his family.
With the help of his wife, he was saved from addiction. Richardson had chose to stay with her husband, and helped him.
“She gave me the chance to be the man I was supposed to be.” Jackson said about his wife.
Sam Elliott and Katharine Ross
Before marrying Sam Elliott, Katherine Ross had experienced four divorces. “I didn’t dare try to talk to her then. She was the leading lady. I was a shadow on the wall, a glorified extra in a bar scene.” Sam Elliott said about their first meeting.
He was watching Ross from the conrner of the set, as they were performing together.
“Probably all that and more. We were working together, and one thing led to another. And here we are.” Ross said.
“We have a common sensibility, but we also work at being together. You work past the [expletive]; you don’t walk away from it. That’s how relationships last.” Said Elliott.
The couple got married in 1984, and still going strong.
“We – I think really what it boils down to is we love each other, and we work at it. And I think more importantly than anything, it takes wanting to be married.”
Denzel and Pauletta Washington
Denzel and Pauletta saw each other for two times. In 1977, they were auditioned for a movvie, as Denzel was fresh graduate, in a leading role.
But even though they were in the same movie, they didn’t talked with each other. Six months later, they had attended to the same party.
In the party, they had talked a lot, and realized that their minds were working the same way. Later, they saw each other in a movie theater, in Manhattan.
They sat next to each other, and for them, that was too much of a coincidence. “Our whole introduction to each other felt like the heavens set it up.” Pauletta said.
In an interview that took place in 2013, they had stated that Denzel had proposed three times to Pauletta. In 1983, the couple finally got married. They had four children together, which raised them with great values.
Alan Alda and Arlene Weiss
The couple met over a cake. Alan Alda stated that it was a perfect way to meet with his wife, Arlene Weiss.
They had attended to a party in 1956, where Alda was sitting at the end of the table.
As he was joking with people, he saw Arlene at the other end of the table, and she was laughing every joke he was making.
“I was captivated… I heard her at the end of the table laughing at my jokes.” Alan said.
There was a rum cake on a shelf, and they started to eat it together. “Arlene and I were the only two people who went in with spoons and ate it off the floor. That’s how you know. When two people eat a cake off the floor, that’s it for life.”
Eleven months later, they exchanged their vows. And 68 years after, they are still going strong. The couple is enjoying each other’s presence in their old age.
“I have a blurb to write for someone’s book. I have soup I want to cook. I have a good chicken I want to roast. I have a book I’m reading that I want to finish. I have email correspondence. I have Facebook posts.” Arlene said.
The couple had three daughters, Eve, Elizabeth, and Beatrice Alda.
As Alan was working all the time, Arlene was taking care of their children. In 2015, Alan was diagnosed with Parkinson’s disease, and they kept it hidden until it was 2018.
