AFTER GRANDMOTHER LOST HER GRANDSON, FRIENDS OF HER GRANDSON KEPT THE TRADITION OF BREAKFAST ON WEDNESDAY MORNINGS
Sam Crowe, the late grandson, had said to his friends at the Bishop DuBourg High School in St. Louis, Missouri, that his grandmother is the better cook, after their their breakfast at the Courtesy Diner. It was in 2021, when that happened.
Her grandmother, Peggy Winckowski stated that they all appeared on her doorstep as she said, “They told me, ‘Grandma, Courtesy’s got nothing on you.’ So I said, next week, why don’t you come to my house, and we’ll have breakfast here?”
“Then, when they were all leaving, they were like, ‘Grandma, what are we having for breakfast next week?”
At that moment, they created a new tradition, where her grandson and his friends would come for breakfast at every Wednesday, which they created happy memories together, in a familial environment.
On the October of 2021, they created a “Wednesday Breakfast Club”, at Crowe’s grandmothers house.
Sadly, in 2022, Crowe passed away in a hit-and-run incident. 15-year-old teen lost his life when his moped was hit by another car. Everyone in his community mourned his loss, as he was a brilliant boy.
As he was the light and joy of their breakfast club, everyone in the club felt his absence, and grieved for Crowe.
After his passing, the club members decided to support grandma Peggy, as they showed up every Wednesday at her house, to show her that she is not alone. As they had breakfast together, they paid tribute to their friend, Sam.
Grandma Peggy was grateful for the amazing friends of Sam, and stated, “Sam would be so proud. Look at what he started.”
Every Wednesday, Peggy wakes up in 5 a.m. and starts preparing breakfast for her children. She makes waffles, and bacons, etc. To feed more than 20 teens.
On the 16th of November, she prepared, eight pounds of bacon, twenty-four eggs, and cinnamon roll waffles for the club, as she stated, “It is worth every minute. It fills my heart,”
After 7 a.m., the club starts to arrive at her house, and she welcomes them with warm hugs, as they are the remnants of her grandson. And the students of Bishop DuBourg, are happy that they can show their support for Grandma Peggy.
17-year-old Owen Reynolds, Crowe’s cousin and the member of the breakfast club, had stated that it is important to keep this tradition, and said, “It’s nice having everyone around. We tell stories (about Sam), and it makes it easier to deal with,”
The club created new ties between Bishop DuBourg students and Notre Dame students. A student from Notre Dame, Annie Hall stated, “Breakfast club brought us all together, so we can get through it together. Being around everyone helps us all.”
And every Wednesday, after the breakfast, the whole community steps outside, and take pictures of their tradition that they want to keep alive, in the name and honour of Sam Crowe, grandson of Peggy.
And in every breakfast, there is an empty plate in their picture, to pay tribute to Sam.
“It melts my heart every time they show up,” Peggy said, and added, “I’ve lost my 15-year-old grandson, but in his place, Sam gave me 30 extra grandbabies.”
