A WOMAN HAD KEPT HER CHILDREN AWAY FROM THE GRANDMOTHER, AFTER THE PASSING OF THEIR FATHER
A mother had stated that the grandmother of her children was a racist woman, and when her husband had lost his life, she kept her children away from their grandmother. The mother had shared her story on Reddit, and asked for advice.
She had stated that she was pregnant from a one night stand, and the man he had slept with wanted to be in the lives of the children. “When I was 27, I got pregnant from an one night stand. The father Robert (fake name) told me that he wanted to be a part of our girls’ lives as co-parents. Before this month, I had met Robert’s mother (the GM in the title) once. When I was in the hospital recovering from giving birth, Robert brought her to meet his daughters. She told him, in front of me, to make sure to get multiple paternity tests because she didn’t want him to be tricked by a “gold-digging n*****”. (Guess what race I am and first two don’t count).”
She had stated that when the children were visiting their grandmother, she was making racist comments. “Because Robert lived in another state and was a workaholic, he only had the girls for alternating major holidays and one month every summer. He would bring the girls to see their GM during his time. GM was his only family, so I never said anything about it. However when the girls were about 5, he and GM had a falling out. I later found out it was because she kept making racist comments towards the girls. One example he gave me is that she kept telling the girls to stop “showing their monkey side” whenever they misbehaved. Over time his relationship with GM improved, but the girls never met her in person again.”
Then she stated that Robert was diagnosed with a terrible disease that took him. “When my family found out about the falling out, they invited Robert to spend holidays with us. He would rent a hotel room nearby or stay in my guest room and come to my family holiday events. A year and a half ago, Robert was diagnosed with a terminal illness. Even with aggressive treatment, he would only live for a couple years. He regretted not spending more time with the girls. Robert decided to quit his job and move nearby. He asked me to change the custody to 50/50 custody, so that he can spend more time with our girls.”
The woman continued, “I reminded him that the guest bedroom has always been open to him. He could move in with us and spend his remaining time with our daughters. I only had one condition. While he can go out to see GM and he can bring the girls along, she cannot come to my house. Robert agreed and moved in. His mother never came to my house, though he did go see her a few times (w/o our girls). Robert died last month. It’s been tough, and we dearly miss him.”
She then concluded her post, as she stated that the grandmother had wanted to see the children occasionally, since they are the reminder of her son. “Last week, GM showed up on my doorstep (the girls weren’t home). She told me that the twins were the only thing she has left of Robert. She asked if she could regularly see the girls. I laughed and told her no. Her only connection to them was through Robert and Robert only. I have not and will not help her see my girls. She protested and said that I was cruel to deny my girls their grandmother. I reminded her that it was Robert who originally didn’t let her see the girls. Even though he has died, I was not going to change that. GM left crying after I said that. I believe that I’m in the right, but some of my family members think that I was too harsh. She’s grieving, and I should let her see my girls at least once. AITA?”
