A GROUP OF BESTFRIENDS ARE CREATING THEIR OWN VILLAGE TO SPEND TIME IN THEIR RETIREMENT
Four couples from Texas, who are best friends for more than twenty years, had wanted to leave Austin behind on their retirement, so they bought a land near Llano River, and wanted to create a village for themselves for their retirement.
Fred Zipp, one of the friends, and former editor of the Austin-American Stateman stated, “When we first looked at it, it was not really that inviting,”
Along with his wife, Jodi, they are one of the four couples who are attending with the plan.
“This is a magical place, but it’s arid,” Zipp said.
“We’re doing what we can to reserve as much water as possible for the native trees and grasses. Fortunately, they’re beautiful.”
At first, the couples were thinking about a single building with many rooms, but later, they agreed on many small houses, to create a village.
San Antonio architect Matt Garcia had made some plans, as the friends wanted to work with them.
For each house, the budged will be $40,000. There will be four 350-square-foot cabins, with double bed inside with a kitchen and a bathroom.
Jodi Zipp said, “Basically we wanted a place where we could spend a ton of time together – eating and drinking and hanging out – but still have privacy and separation when people needed to get away from the gang,”
And they wanted houses to be environmentally usable, which they were crafted with special roofs to collect rainwater, and covered with insulation, to prevent over heating.
Garcia said, “We just wanted something warm feeling that would offset the coolness of the metal on the outside,”
It’s a high-design finish that doesn’t cost a lot of money.”
“If anything good came out of the recession, it was people hitting reset and realizing they don’t need so much space and stuff to be happy,”
“I love it. And I feel proud to be working with clients who have had that realization, that less is more.”
“It’s like a Disney movie out here. We have hare, bobcat, deer and all kinds of birds. As we spend more and more time here, we find more and more.”
