CELEBRITY NAMES WHO TRANSFORMED THEMSELVES FROM THEIR LOOK BACK IN THE 80S
The famous names of the entertainment industry back in the ‘80s, are now looking old, and many of them, such as, Kelly Ann McGillis, Gene Hackman, Shelley Duvall, Leif Garrett, and Jake Lloyd, are looking different than their looks back in time.
KELLY ANN MCGILLIS
The bombshell of the 80s, Kelly Ann McGillis was born in 1957, Newport Beach, California. For her love towards acting, she left high school for studying in Juilliard and the Pacific Conservatory of the Performing Arts.
Through the movies, “Witness,” and “Top Gun,” the actress had her breakthrough. As she was in love with theatre, she kept acting on stages too. In ‘90s, she had welcomed her two daughters, and she wanted to balance her life and career.
When she didn’t received any invitations for sequel of “TopGun,” “Top Gun: Maverick,” the actress said, “Oh my god, no. They did not endorse me. I mean, I’m old and I’m fat and I look age-appropriate for what my age is, and that is not what that whole team is about. I’d much rather feel absolutely secure in my skin and who and what I am at my age.”
“It was very challenging for me to have any kind of sense of self or self-identity or real self-worth other than what I did for a living,” the actress said. “And it just didn’t become a priority; what became the priority initially was raising my girls and being the best sober parent I could be.”
“It wasn’t like a major decision that I made to leave, it was just that other things became more important.”
GENE HACKMAN
Gene Allen Hackman was born in San Bernardino, California, 1930. Over the sixty years of his careers, he had appeared in many movies in the industry. Throughout his career, he had received 33 awards and 39 nominations. He received two Oscars, two BAFTA Awards, four Golden Globes, a Silver Bear, and a Screen Actors Guild Award.
The most remembered projects Hackman appeared in are, “The French Connection,” “Unforgiven,” “Bonnie and Clyde,” “The Conversation,” “Superman,” and “French Connection II.”
“From the time I saw my first movie as a boy, I wanted to be an actor.” The actor stated that he was in love with acting since he was a boy.
After he had his breakthrough, through “Bonnie and Clyde” in 1967, he got married with his wife, Faye Maltese, with whom he had three children, Christopher, Elizabeth, and Leslie.
The couple got divorced in 1986, after 30 years of marriage. As Hackman stated, the industry is turning a person to one self centered, and leads people to make difficult choices and sacrifices.

He got married with Betsy Arakawa, a pianist with a classical background, in 1991, and in 2008 he stated that he was not happy with working, and also missed performing.
After his doctor warned him, Hackman decided to be retired, due to medical problems.
SHELLEY ALEXIS DUVALL
The actress Shelley Alexis Duvall, who was born in 1949, in Fort Worth, Texas, she had appeared in many different roles in her career.
After she got graduated, she started to work as a cosmetics salesperson, talent scouts found her in 1970, at a local party. Director Robert Altman had found her potential, and gave her a role in the movie, “”Brewster McCloud.”
After that, Duvall acted in “McCabe and Mrs. Miller,” “Thieves Like Us,” and “Nashville.” Then in “3 Women” in 1977, Duvall received her award for Best Actress at the 1977 Cannes Film Festival.
She also appeared as Wendy Torrance in Stanley Kubrick’s “The Shining.” As it was a hard movie to shoot, Duvall had struggled with Kubrick, who was ignoring her and putting her in hard situations.
Since 2002, Duvall was living a quiet life in Blanco, Texas. And in 2023, she appeared in “The Forest Hills.”
“Acting again—it’s so much fun. It enriches your life.” The actress said. There were rumors about her absence, which people would say that because of her mental health, she needed to move away. In her interview with People, which happened in 2023, she explained that she is happy, eccentric and sometimes emotional.
LEIF GARRETT
Leif Garrett was born in Hollywood, in 1961. He was five when his career started, where he appeared in “Bob & Carol & Ted & Alice” “Walking Tall,” “Family Affair,” “Gunsmoke,” and “Three for the Road.”
When he was a teenager, he ventured into music industry where he had a deal with Atlantic Records in 1977, and released his album. In 1978, after his album “Feel the Need,” he had his breakthrough.
He was 14, when he started to struggle with drug addiction, which he was living an off-camera partying lifestyle.
After a car accident he had before his 18th birthday, his friend Roland Winkler, a dancer, got paralyzed, and they started to a legal battle.
In 1999, when they reunited in an episode of VH1’s “Behind the Music,” Winkler said that Garret had saved his life in a way, which he added that he wouldn’t chose his pre-accident life.
In ‘80s, Garrent went back to his acting career, which he didn’t made much success. In 2020, Garrett stated that Winkler passed away in 2017, after physical struggles related with the accident. He was 57 when he lost his life.
Garrett had appeared in 1983’s “The Outsiders,” where many famous names, Patrick Swayze, Emilio Estevez, and Tom Cruise were starring.
He had arrested for several times between 2004 and 2006, due to his drug addiction problem. Los Angeles officers had arrested him after they appeared as undercover drug dealers.
In 2010, in his shoes, black tar heroin was found and that led him to a prison sentence. Then he appeared on the fourth season of “Celebrity Rehab” with Dr. Drew, where he had problems with the producers who wanted him to use drugs in the show.
JAKE LLOYD
The Anakin Skywalker of “Star Wars: Episode I – The Phantom Menace,” Jake Matthew Lloyd was born in 1989, in Fort Collins, Colorado. As he appeared in commericals and some episodes of “ER,” his career started when he was young.
He first appeared in “Unhook the Stars,” back in 1996, and then starred in “Jingle All the Way,” along with Arnold Schwarzenegger. Then from 3,000 child, George Lucas handpicked him for Anakin Skywalker.
As Jake received incredible amount of criticism, he decided to retire from acting after the movie. Then he worked with his voice inn five “Star Wars” games for LucasArts. His last movie was “Madison,” in 2005.
Later, Jake moved to Indianapolis, Indiana, and graduated from high school in 2007. As he attended to college for film and psychology, he dropped out in 2008.
And then his life became a mystery for his fans, which in 2024, Jake was not being seen in anywhere. When his mother, Lisa Flowers Broadbent, gave an interview about her son’s life after Star Wars, she revealed that Jake had struggled with mentall illness, and a family tragedy.
A doctor stated that Jake might have bipolar disorder, but the medication he took weren’t effective. As he continued with his college, he kept struggling which led him to miss many classes, and problems in his social life.
As he wasn’t believing that he was mentally ill, sometimes he was refusing to take his medications or talk with his therapist. He was arrested in 2015, after he went for a raod trip from Florida to Canada, which the officers had chased him before he crashed.

He spent 10 months in jail after the accident, and din’t talked with his mother or he took his medication. It took a lot of efforts to make Jake take his medications and attend to doctor’s appointments.
One different time, Jake called in panic and stated that he was shot by an intruder. Then his mother understand that her son was hallucinating. Jake lost his sister, Madison, in 2018. It had traumatized him.
He went to a rehab center amd his mother stated that Jake was improving through the medication and the care from rehab center. He started to act more social, and started to understand his situation.
He was 35 when he started to attend to social activities, where he went to barbecues and holidays.
