WHAT THE GRANDDAUGHTER REVEALED ABOUT HER GRANDMOTHER INTRIGUED THE WHOLE FAMILY

Ruby was an only child, and that was why she was raised very close to her parents. Her parents would attend every field hockey game she would play, and every parent’s meeting at Ruby’s school. That continued in College too.

But after Ruby’s father passed away, things changed drastically.

Now, Ruby had her own family with her husband and six-year-old Cindy. After Ruby’s father passed away, her mother changed a lot. Her mother had a high spirit where she would wear dungarees and paint almost everything, but now she was living like a shadow.

Then, her mother started to spend more time in Ruby’s house, where she was focused on Cindy. Sometimes Ruby would leave Cindy at her mother’s place, and sometimes her mother come and pick Cindy to spend time.

Recently, after her mother would drop Cindy back at Ruby’s house, Cindy would cry all the time, and tries to avoid her grandmother. Ruby was loving her mother, but she started to get suspicious about her mother after her daughter’s behaviour.

As Ruby tried to talk with her daughter Cindy, while they were baking, which was Cindy’s favorite activity, “Honey,” Ruby said, “I have a question for you.”

“Yes, Mama?”

“Why do you cry when grandma is home? What’s wrong? Did something happen?”

“That’s three questions,” Cindy smiled.

“Tell me, baby,” Ruby insisted with a smile.

“It’s because of grandma’s friend. He’s always around.”

“What friend?” Ruby was confused, “She always does things with you alone. Other than that time she and her friend, Beth, took you to the knitting class.”

“But if Grandma is always alone, why does she ask me to say hello to William?”

“William?”

“Before we eat anything, Grandma always says to offer it to William first. But I don’t ever see him. Who is William?”

Ruby turned pale after Cindy said that. William was her late father’s name. When Cindy saw her mother went pale, “Is William a scary man?” She asked.

“No, Grandma won’t make friends with bad guys,” Ruby said as she changed her demeanor, “Come on, let’s make our cupcakes and eat them!”

On the next day, Ruby decided to go and see her mother. She left her daughter with her husband, Dean, who planned a long movie marathon for his daughter, and left for her mother’s house.

Ruby confronted her mother about what Cindy said. Her mother started to cry. “Oh, Ruby,” she said, “I’m so sorry. I didn’t think that she would get spooked by it.”

“Spooked?” Ruby was confused. “Spooked by what?”

“Listen, my love,” her mother said as she held her hands. “I still feel your father, and I know that it’s not healthy, but I do. And sometimes I still talk to him.”

Ruby felt devastated for her mother. She had struggled with accepting her father’s passing too, but she didn’t thought that would make her mother mentally ill.

“I speak to him constantly, Ru,” her mother said. “It started when I was alone, and then it became a coping mechanism. I’ve mentioned it to Cindy a few times. Not to scare her, just as a reminder that Grandpa is around.”

“Mom, I get it. I understand that this is how you’re coping with Dad’s death. But Cindy doesn’t understand it like that.” Ruby said. Then they spent hours about talking old stories where her father William was in.

“Come,” her mother said later, “I have donuts.”

While they were eating donuts and talking, Ruby said to her mother that she should explain the situation to Cindy. “Let her hear it from you,” Ruby said.

“I’m so sorry,” her mother said. “I didn’t mean anything by it.”

“I know,” Ruby responded, “I believe you. Do you think that it’s time to see a psychologist?”

“Oh, Ruby,” her mother was worried. “Are we there yet?”

“Yes,” Ruby said. “There’s nothing wrong with talking to Dad, but it’s the fact that Cindy isn’t sure about spending time with you because of the William thing.”

“Fine, I’ll do it.”

As months passed, Ruby’s mother had progressed a lot, where her relationship with her granddaughter Cindy had improved, where they returned to their old selves, spending time together, and having sleepovers.

But Ruby’s mother was still talking with William, but just not in front of her family. Only when she was alone.
