BOY HELPED OLD NEIGHBOR WITH THE CHRISTMAS DECIRATIONS, LATER LEARNED SOMETHING SHOCKING
As Mark was walking down the street, he was looking at the houses with Xmas decorations, and noticed that one house in the neighborhood was not decorated. As Mark didn’t know who the neighbor was, he knew that she was an old lady who doesn’t talk much with others.
“Why don’t the other neighbors help her put up lights or buy her a Christmas tree?” He askked to himself. Then he made a plan. The old lady would leave house to buy groceries on each Saturday, and he would surprise her with decorating her house for Xmas, while she was away.
He waited, and after the old lady left, Mark quickly decorated the house. As the woman returned, she said, “Oh my God!” Then saw Mark, “Did you decorate my house, young man?” The old lady smiled. “I love it! Thank you so much!”
“I’m glad you like it,” Mark said after he saw the tears in old lady’s eyes. While he was returning home, “Wait!” The woman said, “What’s your name?”
“I’m Mark. Your next-door neighbor,” Mark said.
“Nice to meet you, Mark,” the old lady smiled. “My name is Martha.”
“I rarely see you come out of your house, Martha,” Mark said. “But I’m glad we met today!”
“I’m glad, too,” Martha said, then invited Mark in, “Why don’t you come in and have tea with me? I bought a fresh cake from the store. We can have it together!”
“Sure, I’ll join you,” Mark said to not to offend woman.
“You’ve got a beautiful house, Martha!” Mark said once he entered. “I must say you have a knack for interior designing.”
“Oh yes,” Martha smiled. “This old lady loves to decorate her house.”
As Martha give Mark some cake and tea, “This tea tastes so good!” Mark said. “Will you share your secret recipe?”
“You’re such a charmer!” Martha smiled at Mark. “I don’t have a secret recipe. Just pour hot water and dip two teabags in it. It’s simple!”
While Mark was eating his cake, he noticed a picture on the wall. “This photo seems so familiar,” he said to himself, then he noticed on the other pictures that he had seen them before.
“Hey, Martha. I think I have seen these photos before,” Mark said.
“Really?” Martha asked. “Yes. I don’t know if this makes sense, but the little girl in these photos is my mother.”
After a moment of silence, “Look, Mark,” Martha started. “There’s something your mother never told you.”
“Well, she’s my daughter, Mark. I’m your grandmother.”
“What?” Mark was shocked.
“When your mother was young, she fell in love with your father, and I was against their relationship,” Martha revealed. “I didn’t want her to marry your father.”
When Martha learned that her daughter was pregnant, she was angry. “I asked her to abort her baby. I didn’t want her to start a family with that man,” Martha added.
“Then, she moved next door with your father and refused to speak to me. She married him and never let me come near you, Mark. She kicked me out of her life.”
Mark was shocked with the knowledge she received newly. For all his life, he was told that his grandmother was dead. He was shocked that his mother had lied to him.
“I regret going against her wishes, Mark,” Martha said in sadness. “I should have accepted her wish of marrying your father.”
“But why didn’t you tell me that you are my grandmother?” Mark wondered. “I often passed by your house and greeted you, but you never told me anything.”
“Your mother made me promise I would never approach you, Mark,” Martha said. “I never dared to leave my house and socialize with the neighbors after your mother left me. I thought it was better to stay alone.”
“I can’t believe my mother did this to you! I never thought she could be so cruel to her own mother.”
As Mark returned home, he confronted with his family. As he explained what happened, and how Martha was feeling, “Mom, she’s very sorry about what happened back in the day. She regrets going against you,” Mark said.
“Mark, you need to stay out of this!” Her mother yelled at him. “It’s between her and me.”
As Mark tried to protest, his mother stopped him. On the next day, he went to talk with his mother about his grandmother. “Mom, look. I don’t mean to offend you, but your mother really needs you. I think you should forgive her,” Mark said.
“Mark, I told you to stay out of this,” his mother responded.
As Mark talked about the pictures, and how much Martha missed his daughter, “Alright, Mark,” his mother said. “I’m only doing this because you said so.”
On the Christmas Eve, Mark took his mother to Martha’s house. When they knocked the door, “Who’s there?” Martha asked.
But when she opened the door, she was shocked to see her daughter and Mark. As she started to cry, and hugged them. “I knew Mark would bring you here!”
As her daughter started to cry, “Mom, I’ll never let you go now,” she said. “I’m sorry for everything that happened in the past.”
