AFTER HE COME BACK HOME ON HIS HOLIDAY DURING HIS COLLEGE, AND FOUND OUT THAT HIS MOTHER WAS NOT HOME, AND THE GROCERIES WERE EXPIRED ON THE FRIDGE

Thomas was angry, when his mother, Alexis called him on the morning. He said, “Are you serious, mom? You just called me because you wanted to ask if I had breakfast?! Look, mom, I’m no kid, okay. You need to stop acting like that!”
“But, honey, all I wanted to know was how your health was. You know, this is the first time I’ve sent you this far, and I’m a little concerned. That’s all, honey.” His mother said.
“Please, mom,” Thomas continued, “Aren’t you sick of bothering me like this every day? I have a class at ten o’clock, so I’m leaving. Also, stop calling me every day! Goodbye!”
“But Thomas, listen…I just wanted to ask if you’d be home for the holidays. I was planning on making all your favorite dishes…Hello, Thomas? Are you there, honey? Hello?” As the mother was talking, Thomas hung up the phone.
That was the fourth time Thomas had hung the phone unreasonably while talking with his mother. Alexis and Thomas were having problems, as Thomas wanted to study in New York, while Alexis did not wanted her son to go away, because she was struggling with money, as she was a single mother.
Since her husband left her, her son, Thomas was the only person who stood with her. When Thomas wanted to study away, she was devastated, as she didn’t wanted to lose her son.
For the first months, Thomas was attentive towards his mother, as he would call her everyday, and have long conversations. But as time passed, the phone calls were decreased, as he was talking short.
As she was caling her son, he was sending messages that he was busy or some other thing. But one day, Alexis saw the name of her son on her phone.
As she was happy when she saw her son’s name, her happiness was cut short, because Thomas was calling as he stated that he needed a new laptop.
Alexis cried that day, as she was crying now, after their last phone call.
After a week later, Thomas returned for he was in holiday. As he planned a trip with his friends, COVID had prevented them from their plans. As he returned to his house, he called his mother.
“Mom? Are you there?” There were no response, as his mother was not there.
As he entered the house after he found the spare key, he was shocked with the dust and the dirt of the house. “Seriously, mom? Can’t you at least close the windows before leaving?” Thomas said.
“And why the hell is the house so dirty? We need to talk, mom! This is too much!”
There was no water in the bathroom too. When he looked at the fridge, he saw that the food were expired, and some of them were rotten.
“What the hell is wrong with you, mom? What’s up with you these days?” Thomas said.
As he went to the sofa, sat and started to wait for his mother. He tried to call his mother, but she was not responding.
“Mom, where the hell are you? It’s getting late in the evening!” Thomas said to himself, and decided to go out and look for his mother at their neighborhood.
He went to their neighbors house, he knocked the door, and a woam nwho is in her 60s answered the door, “Hi, how may I help you?”
“My name is Thomas Duncan. I’m your next-door neighbor’s son. Actually, mom hasn’t returned home yet, and she hasn’t returned my calls, so I was wondering if she had stopped by you or one of our neighbors on the way back.”
“You’re her son, and you don’t know where she frequently spends the night?”
“What do you mean? Mom comes back home every evening by 7. She works as a cashier at a grocery store.”
As she was disappointed, the old woman gave Thomas an address, and said, “Go here, and you’ll find her. And yeah, try to be a better person in the future,”
As he went to that address, he was shocked. As he was looking around, he saw that he was in an animal shelter.
As he saw his mother while she was dumpster diving, he said, “Mom, stop doing that!”
“What the hell is wrong with you, mom? What are you doing here?”
“Thomas!” Said Alexis, “I didn’t expect to see you here, honey.”
“First, you tell me what you’re doing here, mom. Why are you working at such a disgusting place?” Thomas said, as he was holding himself to not to cry.
“Oh, honey,”
“I started working here after I was fired at the grocery store….” Alexis started to tell her story.
As she went sick, and went to her work late, she was fired. As she was unemployed and couldn’t find any other job, she started to work at an animal shelter. As they were not paying much, she was sending whole her money to Thomas.
“I frequently work the night shift here, honey. My job is to clean the shelter every day, which isn’t too strenuous, and I frequently find food or coins. However, because I come home in the mornings and am exhausted by the end of the day, I am unable to clean the house. Still, I enjoy my job, and it’s not too bad!”
“I’m sorry you had to go through all of this, mom,” Thomas said, as he was crying. “It’s all because of me. You will no longer work here, mom. You don’t need to.”
“But honey…” Alexis stopped by her son.
“I will support you, mom, and I’ll try to be a better son. I’m so sorry!”
As Thomas started to work, he got his mother a bouquet of flowers with his first payment. There was a card, “You’re the best, mom!”
