He had four marriages, an welcomed three children, with Nancy Barbato. They were teenagers when their relationship started. The couple married in 1939, when Sinatra was a rising star.
As they were living in their Jersey apartment, the couple welcomed their first two children, a daughter, Nancy, and a son, Frank Jr.
Barbato was working as a secretary, during their time in Jersey. Later, the couple moved to Los Angeles, where Sinatra became an iconic musical talent, and a movie star.
After Sinatra’s affair with Ava Gardner, the couple separated their ways. The couple ended their marriage in 1951, which Sinatra married with Gardner, afterwards.
Barbato needed to raise her three children as a single mother, after the divorce.
After six years later, Gardner and Sinatra got separated. Gardner had stated, “We were happy when Frank was on the skids. When he became successful again, his old arrogant self came back.”
They were having troubles in their marriage, as Sinatra was close to many women, as, Marilyn Monroe, Judy Garland, Natalie Wood, Gina Lollobrigida, and Lauren Bacall.
At the age of 50, in 1966, Sinatra married with 21-year-old actress Mia Farrow. They got separated in 1967, after their differences surfaced. Sinatra finally married with Barbara, ex-wife of Zeppo Marx in 1976.
They stayed together for two decades, as for Sinatra, he was at the happiest times of his life. But at the end, he wanted to reconnect with his first wife, Barbato. Tony Oppedisano stated, “Nancy was probably the single longest friendship that he had in his life.”
“Frank was very much in love with Barbara, his last wife, obviously. And it was something that probably couldn’t really ever happen because too many people would have gotten hurt.”
Sinatra was trying to stay close with his youngest child, Tina, but he was having problems, since Tina was not fond of her stepmother, Barbara. As he was feeling guilty for not attending to his children, he talked about that in his deathbed in 1998.
Tina stated that her father was calling her “Pigeon,” as she said, “I’m sorry, Pigeon,” before he passed away.
“I think I hurt you most because you were so young.” He said to Tina, as she revealed in 2021.
