HIS WIFE HAD BOUGHT AN OLD SOFA FROM THE FLEA MARKET, AS HE WAS GOING TO THROW IT OUT, HE SAW THE ZIPPER
30-year-old mother, Lorainne Gilbert liked to search for items in flea market, as she would save money when she bought good shaped second hand products. For her habit, her husband, Harry, had stated that she was crazy.
But for Lorraine, she was just being reasonable, since they had six children to feed, she needed to be reasonable with her expenses.
She found an old sofa for $100 at the flea market that was near her house. She loved the sofa, and bought it.
“Your choice is excellent, ma’am,” said the old man who was selling the sofa.
I bet you have an eye for such things.”
“Oh well, I’m very into this sort of thing. I can quickly spot a good deal,” Lorainne said.
As she called her husband, and wanted an assistance to brought it back home, Harry said, “AGAIN? You went to your stupid shopping again?”
“Oh, Harry! You won’t believe what I found at the flea market. It’s a sofa! And just for $100! And it doesn’t look that old!” Lorainne said.
“$100! Have you lost your mind, Lorraine? You were taken for a ride again! Jesus Christ!” Harry was annoyed.
“Oh, come on, Harry. It isn’t as bad as you think! You haven’t even seen it. Now please come quickly. I can’t bring it on my own.” Lorainne continued.
“I know that piece of crap would be just like the other silly stuff you buy, Lorraine! I can’t believe I have to leave work for that! I swear this is the last time I’m giving in to any of your awful shopping!” Harry was furious, as he ended the call.
But Lorainne was happy that she got a great deal for a great sofa, which it just needed some renovation.
As Harry had carried it inside, he pushed the sofa to the wall, and noticed the little zipper hidden under the cushions.
He was curious, so he opened it, and saw the diamonds and pearls in there.
He shouted then, “Lorraine! Come here!”
“What is it?” She asked, as she ran to the living room from the kitchen.
“Your stupid obsession actually made us rich! Look at that; they look like diamonds! We can sell them and get a new car.” Harry said, as he was laughing.
“Well, Harry. I’m sure they are just pretty good copies of the real ones. I’m an expert at thrift shopping, and I’ve found several pieces that look exactly like the real thing.” Lorraine looked at her husband, as she said.
“But what if they aren’t? We need to take them to a jeweler and have them checked!”
“They would charge us, Harry!”
“Who cares? Think about the money if it’s real!” Harry said, as he wanted to take them. He take his wife with him, and went to the jeweler.
“Well, they’re real diamonds,” Jeweler confirmed as she looked at them.
“What about the price?” Harry was excited.
“Well, we are looking at something worth thousands of dollars…”
“THOUSANDS OF DOLLARS?!” Harry shouted.
“$30 thousand, sir,”, Jeweler smiled, and added, “and that’s a minimum. Unique design, intricate touches, and let’s not forget about the natural pearls it bears.”
As they were leaving, Harry had started to dream about a new car, but Lorraine had stated that, “I’m going to return it to the guy who sold me the sofa, Harry.”
“What? Lorraine, are you insane? Think about the brighter future that awaits you! You can’t be that dumb!” Harry was annoyed with the idea.
“Well, I don’t want to live a better life at the expense of others. So I’m returning it!” Lorainne was sure of her decision.
As Harry didn’t liked the idea, she didn’t care as she went back to the flea market to talk with the old man who sold the sofa.
She had searched for him but couldn’t find him in anywhere, as she had asked about him to other sellers.
As she was going back to her house, she saw the old man on the street, and shouted, “Excuse me, sir!”
“Oh, you! Weren’t you the one who bought the sofa from me?” The old man responded.
As she smiled towards the old man, she had showed their findings, and said, “I was, and I found these in a compartment behind it,”
Peter, the old man, had smiled as he saw the jewelry, then he had stated, “Oh, dear! There they are! They’re my late wife’s earrings. I was looking for them everywhere. I had hidden it from my greedy sons, who sold almost all her jewelry for money. Thank you for bringing them back, but you know what? They’re yours now to keep. I believe it has finally found a new owner.”
“No, sir. I can’t keep them. They are really valuable, and it’s your wife’s last—” as Lorainne was talking, Peter had cut her sentence as, “Please, I insist.”
As Peter insisted a lot, Lorainne tried to refuse his offer, but in the end, she had accepted.
On that night, Lorainne had talked with Harry, about Peter, and how he was living all alone at an old house. And noone to take care of him.
Harry wanted to meet with the man, and apologize for his greedy action. The couple had went to talk with the old man on the next day.
“Actually, sir,” Harry said, “We’re wondering if you’d like to move in with us. We have six children, but because Lorraine and I are orphans, none of them have ever had a grandfather. We would love to welcome you to our family….”
Peter got emotional with the offer, as he had enough with loneliness, he said, “I don’t know what to say. My sons abandoned me long ago, and then here you are, welcoming me into your family. Thank you, children. God bless you both!”
