Their relationship started back in 1984, where they got married in Las Vegas, at the Starlight Chapel.

“We went to the Starlight chapel, and we had a tape of Nina Rota music and we walked down the aisle. The Elvis impersonator did the ceremony, and then we walked out. There were no cell phones, of course, in 1984, and we had no pictures,” she said.

Talented actress, Bette Midler and her husband, Martin von Haselberg, had met in 1984. Star actress was 35 at that time.

And after six weeks of dating they had married. They had eloped in Las Vegas, at the Starlight Chapel.

“My wedding was two people – my husband and me – and, of course, the Elvis impersonator that married us,” Bette said.

“He got all dressed up in this suit that I was like, ‘I’m not getting married to you in that suit!’ So, he had to change his suit and then we went to one of the little churches and we went to get the license. We had a tape of Nino Rota music…and we walked down the aisle”

The couple had one daughter, Sophie, who is 36 now and she is an actress as her mother, which she acted in the Wood Allen movie, Irrational Man.

In 2021, with her appearance on Jimmy Kimmel Live, she had stated, “Apparently, there was a photographer there,”

“When the Starlight Chapel closed its doors about five years ago, they sent us the pictures. We had never seen the pictures before.”

“We used to fight bitterly” Bette said in an interview with, Closer.

“We came to the conclusion that we wanted to raise a child. We never wanted to hurt that kid in any way. [So] we stayed together until it got better, and it did.”

“There was a conscious effort to create exactly the life we have,” added Haselberg.

“My husband is probably the greatest father who ever lived. He taught [Sophie] a foreign language. He taught her how to cook,” Bette said.

“He has looked after me for many, many years. He’s sacrificed a lot.”

“Listening is very hard. And compromise. Compromise is the hardest of all,”

“The blaming, I think, is the worst part…It’s because you don’t want to carry the burden yourself. You want to push it off on someone else. But honestly, you have to learn not to do that.”

Their daughter Sophia married with Harry J. N. Guinness, in 2020, while the COVID-19 pandemic was going on.

“It was so sweet. They had a great time,” Bette said about the wedding.

“They stayed up all night and they drank. They had a ball.”

As with the artistic instinct of van Haselberg, had designed their dream house, their wonderland. They are living in their pastel, family pool house that is sitting in Millbrook, New York.

The house is looking like it jumped out of a Luis Bunuel movie.

As von Haselberg stated, the house is the imagination of his commitment to his wife, as he wanted to bring joy to her life.

Nancy Kintisch, a famous architectural consultant from Los Angeles, and a color specialist, had her points given in the designing of the house too, as she had added Moroccan like pastel colors into the building.

The pool in the house can’t be seen from everywhere, as they had used an architectual trick to hide it. As the house is looking like a church from a country, once you get in, the athmosphere changes.

“At one point, I thought I would make it a barn, but then I thought, Why not a sacred space?” von Haselberg had stated, as he wanted to explain his instinct.

He also took inspiration from Brian Murphy, as he had a house designed in Venice, California. As he saw that house, he wanted to have something similar in his house too, which he added into the design.

“It’s like a mullet. All business in the front, party in the back.” He stated for the pool, and as you went in the house, you get welcomed from lavender ceiling and deep purple front door. The floor of the house is colored with baby pink, for a more feminine feeling.

Kintisch had stated about Halsenberg, “He’s never afraid.” They were working together for more than 30 years, as they had designed many houses in the past.

As you went for the pool, from the sliding glass windows, you enter the feeling of a beach cottage, from the church you just stepped in.
