WOMAN FOUND OUT THAT HER HUSBAND WAS KEEPING HIS SECOND FAMILY IN OUR BASEMENT
Ellen met with her husband, and father of her 4-year-old daughter Lily, George, when it was an autumn day. They were in a small bookstore, and reached to the same book at the same time. As their hands touched, they were aware that something was going to happen.
As they were sharing the same thoughts and dreams, they got married two years after their first meeting. After two years into their marriage, they welcomed their daughter Lily. And then she became the center of their lives.
Their lives turned upside down one day, as George had suffered a heart attack. As they were waiting at the hospital, “Mommy, is Daddy going to be okay?” Lily asked.
“We have to be strong for him, sweetheart,” Ellen said to her daughter, as she hugged her.
She returned to their home to cook for Lily one day, and took a shower before returning to the hospital. Then Lily asked something.
“Mommy, don’t we need to cook more food?”
“What for, sweetheart?”
“For the boy and his mom,” Lily said, which confused Ellen.
“What do you mean, hon?”
“Well…for the people in our basement.”
Ellen was shocked. She was frozen and that caused her to drop the wooden spoon to the ground.
“What are you talking about, Lily?”
“I was playing with my toys one evening,” Lily started, “And I saw Daddy going downstairs with food. I got curious, so the next day, when Daddy wasn’t around, I sneaked down and saw a little boy and his mom reading a book. They didn’t see me.”
Ellen never went into their basement, as the place was belonged to George, where he was freeing his mind in there, while Ellen’s place was her office. As she went downstairs, she found a little boy and a woman in there.
“Who are you? And who is this little boy? What are you doing in my basement?” Ellen asked.
The woman, Melany, was scared, as she was looking at her boy in fear.
“If you don’t explain right now, I’m calling the police,” Ellen continued.
“Ellen, I’m…I’m George’s ex,” Melany started. “We were together before he met you. I was pregnant with Jacob, our son, when we broke up, but I didn’t tell him about the pregnancy.”
“Six years later, after we moved back here to Springfield, I told George about Jacob. He’s been supporting us since, but he was afraid to tell you. Our apartment caught fire recently, and we had nowhere to go. George offered us this place temporarily…I’m so sorry,” she said.
Ellen was shocked with the truth unfolded in front of her. “Where is George? He hasn’t come to see us since yesterday,” Melany asked then.
“He…he had a heart attack,” Ellen could say. “He’s been in the hospital since yesterday.”
Melany’s face went pale “Oh no,” she said as she started to cry.
“He’s stable, but it was a close call,” Ellen continued. “I was actually preparing to go back to the hospital when we started talking.”
“Can we…can Jacob and I come with you? To see him?” Melany asked.
“Yes, of course,” Ellen said as she was confused. “It might be good for George to see both of you.”
George was shocked to see Melany and his son at the hospital, and started to apologize Ellen. It was painful for Ellen to hear her husband’s apologies.
“I’m sorry, Ellen,” George said weakly. “I never meant for any of this to happen. I was afraid of losing you, of disrupting our family. But I see now I only made things worse.”
“I forgive you, George,” Ellen said. “But we have a lot to work through.”
After George returned back home few days later recovering at the hospital, their house went into a silent demeanor. One afternoon, while Ellen was walking in front of Lily’s room, she saw her daughter playing with Jacob.
“We’re siblings now, Jake, and we’re going to live together forever,” Lily said to JAcob.
“Yeah! Sisters and brothers!” Jacob laughed with joy.
