THE RELATIONSHIP OF STEVE BUSCEMI, WITH HIS LATE WIFE, WHO WAS THE INSPIRATION FOR BUSCEMI
The relationship of Steve Buscemi, and Jo Andres had lasted for more than three decades, until her passing in 2019, due to ovarian cancer.
They had a son together, which whom he had walked on the same road as his father, and became an actor in the industry.
66-year-old famous Hollywood actor Buscemi, had appeared in many renowned titles as, “Fargo,” “Reservoir Dogs,” “The Big Lebowski,” “Ghost World,” “Boardwalk Empire,” “The Sopranos,” and “Miracle Workers.”
Before he had his acting career, Buscemi had worked as an ice cream truck driver and bartender, then he tried stand-up, and became a professional firefighter. He is still voluntarily helping people as a firefighter.
He was there, when people needed help during the terrible 9/11 attacks, where he was helping to the ones in need, at the Ground Zero.
His wife, Andres was born in 1954, in Wichita, Kansas. She came to the New York in 80s, as she wanted to be a part of unique fusion of contemporary dance and performance art.
As she was a great artist, the choreographies she had created mesmerized everyone who had seen her performances.
The couple met in 1983, in East Village. Buscemi saw her from a distance, and got struck. He had walked his dog to find her again, to have a chance to talk with her.
As Buscemi stated, Andreas was interested in him too, as she said when she saw his posters, “I’m going to snag that guy.”
They married in 1987, and welcomed their only child, Lucian Buscemi, in 1990. As their son followed his father, he became an actor, where he appeared in “Trees Lounge”, “Interview” , and “4:44 Last Day on Earth”.
As Buscemi was in love with his wife, he was also in love with her work, as she was a gifted artist, choreographer, and filmmaker.
In the Black Kites, 1996 movie, Andreas received many great comments for her work. When it was 2009, Buscemi talked in an interview, as he said, “My favorite work of art is … probably something by my wife Jo Andres. She paints, she makes films, she has done performance.”
But in 2015, their world shattered, as Andreas was diagnosed with ovarian cancer. As through the chemo sessions, her cancer went into remission, when it was 2017, it came back. And when she was 64- in 2019, 6th of January, she closed her eyes, as she gave her last breath.
As Buscemi suffered a lot from losing his wife, he was also in pain, as he witnessed the rough experience his wife had lived through. “People who are going through that, it’s painful. It’s painful to die from cancer.” Buscemi said.
On the 5th of April, 2019, Buscemi talked at the CinemaCon in Las Vegas, as he was receiving an award. During his speech for the National Association of Theater Owners, he stated that he was grateful for his family, and his son.
“My wife Jo, who we knew each other going back to [1984 film] Parting Glances. She was my biggest supporter and, also, audience and my biggest inspiration.”
