STORY OF ROSALYNN CARTER, WIFE OF FORMER PRESIDENT, JIMMY CARTER
Former First Lady of the United States, Rosalynn Carter, was born in 1927, Plains, Georgia. She was only 12, when her father was diagnosed with Leukemia, she had a rough life, as she was responsible for her father.
Her mother was working so they could eat, and Rosalynn was caring for her sick father, as she was responsible her her younger siblings too, since her mother was working hard for her family.
As she was the right hand of her mother at the home, she had stated, “stress, exhaustion, loneliness and grief of caring for a loved one.”
“I’ve never forgotten how she—how we—struggled under the weight of long-term caregiving: not just physically and financially, but emotionally as well.”
Since she had started for caring people at an early age, she had loved the idea of caring about people later on her life too. She had helped her mother, when her mother had went to help her grandfather too.
She had continued with her duties as a caregiver, when she became the First Lady too. She had stated in her bok, “Helping Yourself Help Others: A Book for Caregivers,”
“We can learn to approach caregiving as a blessing as well as a challenging task.”
She met with Jimmy Carter, in Georgia, as Jimmy Carter was from there too. Jimmy was driving with his sister, and her boyfriend, as they were having fun before he returned to his final year to U.S. Naval Academy, in Annapolis. As he had a girlfriend at that time, he fell in love with Rosalynn when he saw her.
He was 17 years old, when he asked Rosalynn for a date, outside of the United Methodist Church. She was into him too, and accepted his date offer.
In her memoir, First Lady from Plains, Rosalynn had stated, “The moon was full in the sky, conversation came easy, and I was in love…and on the way home, he kissed me.”
On a night of 1945, Jimmy had realized that she was the one for her, as he said to his mother about Rosalynn, “She’s the one I’m going to marry.”
At his first proposal, Rosalynn had declined, as she wanted to take things slow. On a later week, when she had visited Jimmy on Naval Academy, she had accepted his second proposal.
And in 1946, 21-year-old Jimmy had married with 18-year-old Rosalynn, at the Methodist Church, where they saw each other.
They had stayed married for 77 years, which made them the longest married presidental couple.
“It’s been the best thing I’ve ever had happen to me — marrying Rosalynn and living together for so long. I’ve been very happy, and I love her more now than I did to begin with— which is saying a lot because I loved her a lot.” Jimmy Carter had stated.
They had their children, Jack, Donnel, Chip and Amy, together.
“It’s kind of this lovey dovey thing that’s been going on forever. They’ve evolved, and still are evolving into an equality that I don’t think many people ever get.” Chip had stated.
Their marriage ennded on the 19th of November, 2023, as the former First Lady Rosalynn Carter had passed away, as she was diagnosed with dementia. But their love is still standing strong.
She was under hospice care with her husband, as her condition was needed to be checked on momentarily. Her family and her husband were with her, as she had passed away.
“She will be sorely missed not only by our family but by the many people who have better mental health care and access to resources for caregiving today,” Chip Carter had stated.
“Rosalynn was my equal partner in everything I ever accomplished. She gave me wise guidance and encouragement when I needed it. As long as Rosalynn was in the world, I always knew somebody loved and supported me.” Jimmy Carter had said.
